LITERARY OPPORTUNITIES

AUTHORS AND POETS WANTED

Youngstown State University Literary Arts Association will publish short fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and interviews with artists and writers through "Jenny". "Jenny" will appear twice a year, in late fall and spring. We will be publishing 5-7 pieces of fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry per genre, per issue. We hope to bring together writers and artists both from the local region as well as the wider world, connecting our stories with yours, yours with ours here in America's heartland and America's rustbelt. Submissions do not have to be set in Youngstown, or in rustbelt or postindustrial settings at all, though we do encourage writing and art that speaks to that experience.

Deadline for the Spring 2011 issue is March 5, 2011. If your submission arrives after that, we will consider it for our Fall 2011 issue, the deadline for which is October 28, 2011.

Acrylic Essentials Saturday is the first workshop of 2011. Artists of all levels will find the session useful. The emphasis is not on "how to paint a pretty picture" but on what these products can do for you. Creating small sample charts promotes a solid understanding of the paint's basic properties and behaviors, at the same time that it affords a glimpse into its unlimited potential. All Golden paints are included in the cost of this workshop.

In the end, you'll not only be in a better position to make the most of the products you already own, but to advance your own aesthetic interests.

Date & time: Saturday, Feb.12, 10am-3:30pm with a 1/2 hr. break for bagged lunch... see the website for further description: http://www.goldenpaints.com/artist/wap/artist.php?uid=44

To register, mail a check to my home address for $85. Note that this is for Acrylic Essentials Saturday. Include your phone number & email. Please note that the workshop is at my studio (different address, no mailbox) which has easy access from I-75 and is the first building off of Spring Grove Ave.

I have 4 registered and room for 8 more participants. I am offering the same workshop the following day, Sunday Feb.13, in Mason OH.

Feel free to call with any questions.
Thanks and looking forward to working with you,

Bringing a Visual Arts component to New Albany, OH
The New Albany Arts Council is supporting and promoting a New Albany Art League, a start up project being built by the efforts of NAAC board member, Nathaniel Edwards. The mission of the New Albany Art League is to showcase artists through professional exhibitions and sponsored events. Rather than being an insular organization, the NAAL will play a part in the inclusive process of supporting the growth and evolution of the arts and culture role that is becoming predominant in defining Columbus as a viable 21st Century City.

New Albany has a heritage towards supporting and participating in the arts, and the arrival of a Visual Arts organization in which to call its own is exciting and promising. A goal of the NAAL is to not only be a great local arts organization, but to give opportunity to help showcase the next generation of artists throughout Central Ohio, promoting contemporary talent and giving artists market share, whether through a corporate arts program, exhibition or sponsored event. Presently, we are looking for enthusiastic individuals who would like to participate in realizing this new arts organization through joining the NAAL Steering Committee.

We are looking for people with a strong passion for the arts, including those with skill sets that could prove invaluable towards piecing together a stellar arts organization. Our spectrum of need includes individuals with marketing, legal, financial and web design expertise.
Please contact Nathaniel Edwards if you are interested in becoming part of our Steering Committee or have any questions or comments about the NAAL.

OHIO PERCENT FOR ART PROGRAM
About the Program:

The Ohio Legislature recognized the state's responsibility to foster culture and the arts and to encourage the development of artists and craftspeople. The result of this wasOhio's Percent for Art legislation, which became effective July 1, 1990. The legislation provides funds for the acquisition, commissioning and installation of works of art for new or renovated public buildings with appropriations of more than $4 million.

For these projects the law provides that one percent of the total appropriation will be allocated for the acquisition, commissioning and installation of art work. Since the legislation went into effect, more than 100 projects have been completed. The completed projects have brought public art into many areas of the state. Major cities as well as small communities have benefited from the program.
